Che cos' è lo scandalo? Pasolini intervista Moravia sui problemi sessuali. Tratto da "Comizi d' amore"

What is the scandal? Pasolini interviews Alberto Moravia about sexual problems. Drawn from "Comizi d' amore"

Moravia: The sexual problems have to be rated in their right measure, namely of reproduction and exaltation of the family and the species.
Pasolini: I am back from a scandalized people’s world, you, Moravia, are you scandalized by something or not?
Moravia: No, never. I could say that the stupidity makes me scandalized, but it is not true. I think that we have always to try to understand that there is always concrete possibility to understand the things, the things that we understand do not make us scandalized.
Pasolini: Can you imagine, conceive, represent inside yourself the “to be scandalized” phenomenon?
Moravia: The person who is scandalized is a person who sees something different from himself, and something threatening for himself; It is not only a different thing, but it threatens the same person, both physically, and about  the image that the person thinks of himself. The scandal, at bottom, is the fear to lose our personality.
Pasolini: In conclusion who is scandalized is psychologically unsure, is basically a conformist.
Moravia: It is true, a person who is scandalized is a person deeply unsure.
Other person: The opinions on the sexual’ s life have a certain defensive function for people, namely believing that the things have to be in a certain manner, according to certain social norms, to certain establishments; it has a psychological function, it depends by our instinctive impulse’ s aggression; we are afraid of our instinct and we defend against them with this kind of conformism.
Pasolini: The scandal as the element of the instinct of preservation, then. What would you, Moravia, say to conclude?
Moravia: I would say this: a belief that has been conquered with the use of the reason and with an exact exam of the reality is stretchy enough not to scandalize. On the contrary, if it is a belief received without a serious analysis of why it has received, accepted for tradition, laziness, education is a conformism.
Pasolini: Conformism as stubborn certainty of the unsure?
Moravia: For example: The men who have a deep religious sense are not scandalized ever. I do not think that Christ has been scandalized ever. Pharisees were scandalized.
